Clinical Cupping Massage Therapy

Home » Clinical Cupping Massage Therapy

As a licensed massage therapist (#MT20900063), Dr. Hartman was asked by several clients to learn how to preform cupping therapy.

What is cupping therapy? It has been used for centuries as a healing therapy and is very similar to massage therapy. Massage cupping has been seen as non-invasive, effective, inexpensive and a safe treatment w/ several therapeutic modalities. It has many of the same positive effects as massage therapy does.

Types of Cups used:Plastic, or Silicone. Dr. Hartman was trained to use Silicone cups, they are considered the best, easier to use, and will only be using them in cupping therapy sessions.

What is Clinical Cupping Therapy? The suction draws a small amount of skin and superficial muscle into the cup and is moved in all directions. Similar to massage that applies pressure to the muscles but cups are used instead of hands, fingers, thumb, forearm, or elbows.  Like cupping, it is an ancient method used for thousands of years to promotes healing and detoxification, promoting flow of blood, circulation, lymph and removing stagnation, supplying oxygen and nutrients to cells, softening tight muscles and relieving knots and loosening up adhesions, reduces pain and edema, reduction of excess fluids, decreases inflammation, improves lymph flow and opens blockages in the lymph nodes, relieves tension and stress, promotes muscular and nervous system relaxation, eliminates chronic congestion and has therapeutic effects in the body for a broad range of health challenges.

Preparing for my session:

  1. Make sure you eat something before you come for your session –you should NOT come in on an empty stomach
  2. Make sure you have a couple glasses of water before and drink water throughout the day after your session
  3. Wear comfortable clothes that can be easily moved –nothing tight fitting.
  4. Avoid taking blood thinners including aspirin
  5. Body Hair – if you have an abundant amount of hair you may want to consider removing it from the area of focus. It is NOT a requirement but the suction stays better on and glides easier on hairless areas.
  6. There is no need to wear make-up, especially when working on the back areas
  7. PLEASE do not use any scented lotions, cologne, or perfumes.

Any side effects to cupping therapy?  No. Only deep relief and relaxation throughout their body. It is one therapy most continue to receive due to how much better they feel afterwards and the immediate results.

Contraindications For Cupping – It’s prohibited for patients:

  • Cancerous areas or lesions
  • Prominent skin infections, open wounds, or inflamed areas
  • No cupping over abdominal area during menstruation
  • No cupping over Deep Vein Thrombosis or spider veins
  • Pregnant woman the lower back, abdominal and upper shoulder areas are avoided due the belief that these areas stimulate birth through stimulation of meridians. However, arms, legs, feet, neck, & mid back can be done.
  • The front and side of the neck are prohibited, i.e., Sternocleidomastoid, Platysma, Scalene, Sternohyoid, Omohyoid, etc. due to the large blood vessels proximity, e.g., External, Posterior, Internal, and Anterior Jugular vein, Tributaries, Lingual, and Pharyngeal veins, Superior, and Middle Thyroid arteries etc.
